Top Fall Trends Straight From the Runway

New York Fashion Week has come to a close and it’s time to break down some of the major trends we saw on the runway. While there were over 150 collections from  America’s brightest fashion talent, 4 trends seems to resonate across many of the designer’s minds.

Trend One: All Black Everything

For years now a select group of the fashionista population has sworn by the rule of all black and for Fall, designers catered to that sentiment. Vera Wang, Andreas Melbostad of Diesel and Alexander Wang presented collections entirely in black. While other designers may not have been as committed to all black as these three, you would still see head-to-toe black looks sprinkled throughout presentations.

Trend Two: The Statement Coat

I will be the first to admit that I haven’t purchased a new coat in years. Coats are one of those wardrobe items that are an investment and typically don’t need to be replaced as frequently as other items. However, this fall, a statement coat is on the TOP of my much purchase list. Beautiful, luxurious, statement coats filled the runways this season. In various colors, lengths, and textures, the fall runways showed us just how important the perfect coat can be.

Trend Three: Wide Leg Pant

Although the “skinny” cut pant isn’t going anywhere anytime soon, designers gave us a modern approach to the wide leg pant. While the wide leg pant is an overt nod to the glam styles on the late 60’s and 70’s, there is still something very fresh about styling it with a fitted top and of course, a statement coat. What I love about this silhouette is that it looks great on literally every woman regardless of age or size.

Trend Four: Fringe, Feathers, and Fur.

This may sound like three separate trends, but I have combined Fringe, Fur and Feathers into a basket I like to call “Opulent Embellishment”. Any garment is instantly elevated to opulent status when you add embellishments that create movement. Take for example the fringe tote from Elizabeth and James. Underneath the fringe is a simple rectangular bag with two straps, but the fringe makes it that special “must have” piece. Designer Tadashi Shoji’s collection titled “The Beauty of Flight” featured several alluring looks with beautiful feathers. Of course fur is always a popular go to for winter, but instead of just seeing fur coats and scarves, we saw pliantly of fur vests, bags and trims.
