There is nothing worse than dry, chapped lips. Just because winter is behind us, don’t forget about taking care of your pout. I am here to give you 5 simple steps to perfect lips all summer long!
Step 1: Exfoliate
I am sure you have heard how important it is to exfoliate the skin on your face, but don’t neglect those lips! Just like the skin on our face, our lips need the dead skin cells removed to keep them soft and healthy. I exfoliate my lips once per week using the same exfoliator I use for my skin being very careful not to get it inside my mouth. Be sure to wipe all the exfoliator off with a clean washcloth.

Step 2: Stop Licking Your Lips
It comes so natural, but licking your lips is one of the worst things you can do. Licking removes the thin layer of natural fat that protects your lips and any moisturizer you may have applied, leaving your lips susceptible to the environment. That leads to cracked and/or peeling skin on the lips, which leads to pulling or biting, which leads to even further damage. Do yourself a favor and break the habit of licking your lips.
Step 3: Drink Water
I have always said that water is the number one thing you can do for healthy skin, including your lips. Think of it as moisturizing from the inside out. Try your best to drink as close to half your body weight in ounces each day. For example, if you weight 130 lbs, you should be drinking 65 oz. of water each day.
Step 4: Keep the Moisture In.
There are literally thousands of lips balms, butters, and creams to keep your lips moisturized ranging in price from less than $1 to over $50. The important thing is that you find one you like and use it regularly. I prefer lip butters from The Body Shop. They have a variety of flavors that keep my lips protected and soft thought the day. If you are looking to add a bit of color, they one of their “Born Lippy” products. They add a slight hint of color that looks natural and never dries out the skin on your lips.
Step 5: Treat Your Lips Each Night
Don’t make the mistake of going to bed without putting on a layer of moisturizer. The hours that pass while you are sleeping keep your lips exposed to the air especially in summer when most of us are running the air conditioning or fan.
