If there’s one thing most of us aren’t getting enough of, it’s got to be sleep. Life can be pretty demanding, and when it feels like there aren’t enough hours in the day, one of the first things many people will sacrifice is the amount of sleep they get. While this probably won’t affect you that much if it’s something you only do very occasionally, a concurrent lack of sleepless nights can have a lasting impact on your health. Common signs of sleep deprivation include ashen skin, irritability, poor concentration and bloodshot eyes, to name just a few. Moreover, there are lots of different reasons why so many people struggle to sleep at night – stress can play a big role in our ability to drift off, and most of us don’t need to be told about the dangers of technology in the bedroom. But did you know that one of the other reasons why you’re not getting your forty winks could be down to your bed? We all know that there are some people who could fall asleep on a washing line. But if you need a little more comfort to settle down for the evening, you may want to rethink your design of your bed. Everyone wants to wake up in the morning feeling refreshed, and a few simple changes to your sleeping quarters could make a truly positive difference to your life.
Replacing the bedframe
Owls hooting outside or your partner snoring next to you – it’s safe to say that there are quite a few annoying noises which keep some of us up at night. But out of all of them, a squeaky bed frame has got to be one of the most annoying. A loud noise every single time you shuffle in bed is bound to wake you and become tiresome pretty quickly. Aged bed frames and thin metal ones are the biggest culprits for this kind of thing, so you may be better off investing in a solid wooden one for minimal noise.
Re-thinking your sheets
You should never have to put up with below-par sheets in your home. Opting for the cheapest bedspread might seem like the most viable option at the time, but if the material is cheap and itchy, you’ll be unlikely to get a wink of sleep. It is true though that egyptian cotton sheets are not as expensive as you might think, and can make all the difference to your sleeping experience. Also, bear in mind the weight of the duvet you have. A very heavy one during hot weather can be stifling and uncomfortable, so swap it for a lighter one during summer.
A mattress that works for you
There is a lot of debate over what kind of mattress is best for our health and posture. A lot of people swear by memory foam, while others claim that a firm mattress is a secret to a good night’s sleep. The truth is to work with whatever works best for you. If you feel like your current mattress is too squashy, visit your local mattress store and try out some harder ones. Mattresses are a costly investment, so it is vital that you get it right first time.
